Atlantic Shores Hurricane Preparedness Exercise Puts Virginia Beach in National Spotlight

Emergency Response Drill Part of Award-Winning Retirement Community’s Commitment to Support Public Service

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (PRWEB) April 30, 2018

In the wake of a major hurricane, buildings are destroyed, airports flooded, and roads blocked, with patients at a long-term care facility in wheelchairs and on backboards awaiting an emergency helicopter airlift.

On May 7, 2018, a similar catastrophic disaster will unfold as a staged event at Atlantic Shores Retirement Community in Virginia Beach, in a full-scale exercise designed to help local, state and federal agencies work together to exercise emergency response plans and coordinate relief efforts for natural or man-made emergencies, ranging from natural disasters to shootings and bioterrorism.

The Atlantic Shores Evacuation is part of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Exercise Vigilant Guard, and Virginia Department of Emergency Management Virginia Emergency Support Team Exercise (VESTEX) series of preparedness events occurring across the Mid-Atlantic, April 30-May 11. The exercise is sponsored by The Eastern Virginia Healthcare Coalition (EVHC), and produced with input from the Atlantic Shores Evacuation Exercise planning team.

Each of FEMA’s 10 national regions are analyzed for threats most likely to affect area citizens. For the Mid-Atlantic region, FEMA’s National Level Exercise (NLE) 2018 will examine the ability of all levels of government, private industry, and nongovernmental organizations to protect against, respond to, and recover from a major Mid-Atlantic hurricane.

These unclassified exercises enact a specific disaster scenario, and give officials, observers, media personnel, and players from participating organizations the information necessary to observe or participate in real-time.

Other key players include the Air National Guard, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, and the Virginia Department of Health.

According to Exercise Director Glenn McBride, Regional Healthcare Coordinator for Eastern Virginia Healthcare Coalition, “As part of the exercise, all players involved work together and rehearse their disaster relief capabilities with one main goal: unified support for the citizens affected. Relationships are built between state, federal, military and civilian agencies, and give each an understanding of how the others work. A disaster can strike at any time -- and the best way to mitigate the resulting fallout is through preparedness and extensive training. The Mid-Atlantic region will be very prepared for future disasters because of this drill."

The scenario for this exercise involves a post-storm response to a major hurricane that makes landfall near Hampton Roads, Virginia, causing severe damage to residences, businesses, and critical infrastructure throughout the entire region.

A long-term care facility was located in governor’s pre-evacuation area, and not all patients were evacuated. The facility sustained storm damage, requiring 30 patients to be moved. All nearby emergency healthcare facilities are at surge capacity. Local roads are closed and EMS ground transportation is limited to life-threatening emergency response, requiring request for a rotary wing airlift to move patients to further care. The closest airfield is underwater (Fentress). Patients will be airlifted to the nearest, Oceana, by T-10 helicopter from Ft. Eustis, for further transport by fixed-wing aircraft. Patients will be moved to different facilities throughout the state, based on availability in coordination with the Virginia Hospital Alerting and Status System (VHASS).

Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria last year reinforced the need for coordinated preparedness, and NLE 2018 provides a well-timed opportunity to apply lessons from those storms in advance of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, which begins on June 1.

Atlantic Shores Retirement Community was selected to be the evacuating Long Term Care facility in the Eastern Virginia region. Atlantic Shores’ participation in this drill is evidence of the growing public safety partnership between state and local jurisdictions in response to the constant threat of natural disasters and terrorism our nation and communities face.

Donna Marchant-Roof, Atlantic Shores Managing Director of Healthcare shared, “We were honored to be chosen as the site for this vital exercise, and to be able to partner with key players in raising the local level of preparedness for disasters affecting our region. In turn, this drill is providing us with the ability to rehearse our emergency preparedness plan in a real-world setting with our entire staff, who will enact their actual job roles.”

Atlantic Shores is known for their active residents and staff, who share their gifts and talents to make the world a better place, through a variety of community impact programs benefiting youth, seniors, and military veterans.

Programs have included The Pin-Up Boys of Atlantic Shores charity calendar, featuring gentlemen from Atlantic Shores, creatively obscured to create the illusion of nudity in a range of comical vignettes, generating more than $20,000 to purchase a new ambulance for the Princess Anne Volunteer Rescue Squad. The community also hosted the Virginia Beach Police Department’s Senior Citizens’ Police Academy, designed to give participants a better understanding of the procedures, responsibilities, and laws that guide the police department's decisions, with live Special Operations, SWAT, mounted patrol and K9 unit presentations.

Atlantic Shores was recently honored with the distinguished CoVa BIZ Magazine Community Impact Award, presented to the top 10 local businesses consistently and creatively making an impact in the Hampton Roads area by giving back.

Ranking of States Based on Approval Rates and Loan Sizes

SILICON SLOPES, Utah (PRWEB) April 30, 2018

In honor of National Small Business Week, Lendio, the nation’s leading marketplace for small business loans, today announced its third annual list of top 10 states for small business lending, based on lending data from the Lendio platform, which matches businesses with more than 75 lenders.

This year’s top states for small business lending are:

1. Utah & California (tied at No. 1)
2. Washington
3. New York
4. New Jersey
5. Texas
6. Florida
7. Virginia
8. Colorado
9. Massachusetts
10. Illinois

Key Findings:· In each of the top states, demand for loans increased year-over-year.
· The states with the biggest percent increase in demand for loans year-over-year were Texas (119%), Illinois (101%), Florida (95%) and Utah (81%).
· In eight of the top states, the average loan size per borrower increased by 60 percent or more year-over-year.
· The states with the largest percent increase in average loan size year-over-year were Massachusetts (147%), New Jersey (121%), Colorado (100%) and California (91%).
· Utah, California, Washington, Texas and Florida remain stronghold states, ranking on the list three years running.
· New Jersey, Massachusetts and Illinois ranked among the top 10 states for small business lending for the first time.

According to a Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland report, nearly half of small businesses need additional funding each year; however, since 2008, it’s been a challenge for small business owners to access financial capital. Continued growth and innovation in online lending platforms is transforming the funding landscape.

Pudding on Smiles, owned by Michael and Kendra Sanders of Dallas, Texas, is one of the many success stories to come from better access to growth capital for small businesses. They began their online pudding shop with around $400 of their own cash. “We didn’t seek out opportunities because we didn’t have the production capacity,” said Michael Sanders. “Getting funding in place has helped us to really start expanding our business. We hope to have a larger national and potentially global brand in the near future.”

“Lack of financing makes it hard for small business owners to focus on the big picture,” said Brock Blake, CEO and founder of Lendio. “This list showcases how online lending technology is giving entrepreneurs the freedom to create, innovate and succeed.”

In 2017, Lendio helped facilitate more than $300 million in funding in all 50 states, a 62 percent annual increase in loans originated through its platform. Loans were made to entrepreneurs in diverse industries including construction, retail, restaurants and health care.

About Lendio’s Top 10 States Ranking
The top 10 states ranking is based on a calculation of several key indicators, including approval rates and loan sizes, from among thousands of Lendio’s customers from April through March each year. Three Amherst County, VA Agencies Streamline, Using Aladtec.com

Software app saving county administrators time; puts scheduling tools as close as deputies, first-responders' smartphones

AMHERST, Va. (PRWEB) May 01, 2018

"God's country. That's how many people describe Amherst County.

“Natural beauty, low business and living cost, and its convenient location all add up to a great place to live and work," declares the introduction on AmherstVAbusiness.com, website for the region's economic development agency.

Amherst County citizens would likely include “reliable public safety agencies” and “efficient public services” as essential elements of a “great place”.

A cloud-based software program appears to be helping three units of county government achieve those goals.

Two wings of Amherst County public services recently began using scheduling software to buttress around-the-clock coverage by the sheriff’s department and steamline work conditions for 40 full-time county employees. Medics and firefighters who staff Amherst’s Public Safety department were already using the platform.

Amherst County Public Safety first came across Aladtec cloud-based software in early 2017 when IT director Jackie Viar saw it mentioned on a website. She then contacted agencies in several neighboring Virginia communities which used the digital platform for scheduling dispatchers, paramedics and firefighters, and filling open shifts.

Previously, all schedules were worked out on paper and staff would have to visit the Amherst station to learn when they worked. Supervisors can now schedule 24/7 firefighter-paramedic coverage at the Amherst, Pedlar and Monelison stations for months in advance.

To fill a shift due to an illness or vacation, Viar or another administrator can send out a "coverage alert" message to members, who can reply immediately from a smartphone, desktop or a Toughbook computer on-board the ambulance. Features in the software also allow supervisors to track professional certifications, e-mail or text announcements, and create customized forms and reports.

The system has eliminated employee allegations of favoritism that a medic or firefighter grabbed an open shift before others knew it was available. And staff appreciate being able to view schedules via their smartphone or the computers in trucks or at the stations, Viar said.

Months later, Aladtec was among several vendors county administrators considered in their search for an efficient program track vacation accruals and eliminate paper timesheets.

Linda Martin Warner, Director of Human Resources for the county, said the scheduling function isn't as important for county employees who work conventional hours.

Leave accruals and timesheets “are probably the only two functions we'll probably ever use," she said. Because regular county employees don't work shifts, like deputies and EMS staff, “we are able to be much more flexible than those in the public safety organizations."

Had Amherst County opted for a different system, some 50 public safety workers would have had to enter time sheets into separate systems. "I did not want that to happen," said Warner.

Just two months into the implementation, she says the Aladtec tools are saving her time.

"I was tracking 40 employees' leave on manual spreadsheets, so it's been a huge time-saver. I would spend hours on those spreadsheets every week so it certainly has cut that time in half.

“And also, our employees have the ability to see their leave balances in real time, 24/7, and that's a huge benefit, because they were having to wait on me to update their spreadsheet and sometimes, it could take months," said Warner.

Using a smartphone or desktop computer to file timesheets is new to many employees, but "I think in another month everything will have shaken out," said Warner. "We still have a few little glitches that we're cleaning up."

In an e-mail message, County Administrator Dean Rodgers said the County is "using the software as an interim measure until we completely replace our accounting suite. When that occurs we will adopt a software platform that includes ALL the employee recordkeeping requirements.

"As a one-person HR department, Linda was overwhelmed with all the record-keeping and Aladtec is able to do a portion of it for her. It is not a complete solution. It was chosen because our Public Safety staff was already using it and was familiar with it. Having some of the staff familiar made it possible to reduce somewhat the total anxiety of a new system," Rogers noted.

Other area agencies using Aladtec include the Waynesboro First Aid Crew, Bedford Life Saving Crew, Bedford County Fire & Rescue, Scottville Volunteer Rescue Squad, Botetourt County Emergency Services, Moneta Rescue Squad, Chamblissburg Rescue Squad, UVA Medical Communications Center, Hardy Life Saving Rescue, Inc., and Lake Monticello Volunteer Fire Dept. & Rescue Squad, Inc.

New Research Shows Neurofeedback is as Effective as Medication in Treating PTSD

BrainTrain announces publication of a study finding that neurofeedback improved well being and attention in veterans with PTSD.

RICHMOND, Va. (PRWEB) May 01, 2018

A newly published study found that the success rate of neurofeedback treatment for veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) matched that of anti-depressant medication. Usually the first line of treatment for this disorder, anti-depressant medication typically results in benefits as high as 60% (Berger et al., 2009*). Using BrainTrain’s SmartMind 3 neurofeedback system, the treatment employed in this study led to significant improvements in auditory and visual attention which the researchers believed resulted in enhanced social interaction and greater feelings of well-being. The study was conducted at California State University, San Bernardino, and was recently published in NeuroRegulation (McReynolds, et al., 2017**).

PTSD is characterized by constant reliving of the traumatic event, problems with social interactions, a state of hyperarousal and exaggerated startle response, and other forms of distress. Prior to treatment, 15 of the 20 participants in this study reported severe to moderate levels of distress - frequent and elevated negative states of anxiety and depression and very limited positive feelings of general well-being, health, and vitality. After completing 40 half-hour sessions of neurofeedback, 9 of the 15 individuals (60%) who were initially very distressed clinically improved in their emotional state and 7 of these 9 (78%) rated themselves as having a positive state of well-being.

The clinical interventions used in this study were provided by Dr. Connie McReynolds, Director of the CSUSB neurofeedback clinics, and her staff. An individualized, 40-session neurofeedback training plan using the SmartMind 3 system was developed for each participant and clinically modified as necessary to optimize performance. Therapeutic goals focused on improving attention and reducing mental stress related to depression and anxiety. SmartMind 3 measures brainwave activity with greater accuracy than other neurofeedback systems by continuously filtering out signal artifacts such as facial tension, eye blinks and eye movements during training.

The researchers used standardized testing before and after training to measure distress, anxiety and depression, as well as visual and auditory attention. Prior to training, in addition to suffering from elevated states of anxiety and depression, participants were also found to have mild to moderate impairments in auditory and visual attention, as measured by the IVA-2 Visual and Auditory Continuous Performance Test. After completing the neurofeedback treatment, testing showed that they had improved significantly in both auditory and visual attention with most subjects now scoring in the normal range. A significant positive relationship was found between the improvements in auditory attention and processing speed and greater feelings of well-being. This relationship suggested to the researchers that becoming a more attentive listener and communicator resulted in enhanced social interaction, leading to a more positive emotional state. Future researchers may wish to explore whether combining medication with neurofeedback in the treatment of PTSD would have a more powerful result than either method used alone.
