Here is how Republican Sanford lost in South Carolina after Donald Trump crticised him

$

0
US Representative Mark Sanford, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, lost a Republican congressional primary in South Carolina after Trump urged voters to punish Sanford's disloyalty by tossing him from office.

A few hours before polls closed on Tuesday, Trump tweeted that Sanford was "nothing but trouble" and "very unhelpful to me." He backed Sanford's pro-Trump challenger, state legislator Katie Arrington, for November's congressional elections.

Arrington, who made a campaign issue of Sanford's criticism of Trump, won 50.6% of the vote to Sanford's 46.5% with almost all ballots counted. That just crossed the 50% threshold to avoid a runoff later this month between the top two contenders.

The South Carolina race highlighted primary voting in five states on Tuesday. Nevada, North Dakota, Maine and Virginia also chose candidates for the midterm election on November 6, when Democrats hope to capture a majority of the US Congress.

The upset of Sanford, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, was the latest sign of Trump's firm grip on the Republican Party. The onetime insurgent has made allegiance to his leadership a litmus test in many Republican races.

Sanford had been critical of Trump at times, saying he "fanned the flames" of intolerance and decrying his disregard for facts. But during the campaign, he ran ads saying how often he voted with the president.

That was not enough for Trump, who also mocked Sanford with a reference to a 2009 scandal when the then governor disappeared for days before surfacing to say he was "hiking the Appalachian Trail."

Later, Sanford admitted he was involved in an extramarital affair in Argentina.

Trump, who issued his tweet as he returned from his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said Sanford "is better off in Argentina." On Wednesday, he congratulated Arrington in another tweet, saying his advisers had earlier told him to stay out of the race but that he "had to give it a shot."

Republican Representative Justin Amash, Sanford's fellow conservative and House Freedom Caucus member, fired back at Trump after his attack on Sanford.

"Unlike you, Mark has shown humility in his role and a desire to be a better man than he was the day before," Amash said on Twitter.

Sanford is the second Republican member of Congress to lose in a nominating contest this year, following Robert Pittenger's loss in North Carolina last month. But Sanford's South Carolina district is considered a safe Republican seat, meaning the outcome is unlikely to play a role in November's battle for control of the House.

*DEMOCRATS TARGET COMSTOCK*

In Virginia, a state legislator favored by the Virginia Democratic Party establishment won a crowded battle for the right to challenge one of the most endangered congressional Republicans in November's elections.

Democrat Jennifer Wexton won a six-way primary race in a suburban Washington district and will take on Republican Barbara Comstock, one of the Democrats' top targets in their push to pick up the 23 seats they need to claim a majority in the US House of Representatives.

Comstock's district, home to many federal government workers, has drifted left in recent years. Democrat Hillary Clinton carried it over Trump by 10 percentage points in the 2016 presidential election.

Corey Stewart, a combative conservative Republican and immigration hardliner who nearly upset Ed Gillespie for the party's gubernatorial nomination last year, won the right to face Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, the 2016 vice presidential candidate, in November's US Senate election in November.

Trump weighed in on Stewart's victory on Wednesday, resurrecting his 2016 attacks against Kaine and saying in a post on Twitter that Stewart had "a major chance of winning."

In North Dakota and Nevada, voters set the stage for two of the most competitive US Senate races in November, when Democrats must pick up two seats to capture a Senate majority.

In North Dakota, Republican Representative Kevin Cramer easily won the nomination to challenge Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp. In the swing state of Nevada, Democratic Representative Jacky

Rosen sailed to the nomination to face vulnerable Republican Senator Dean Heller.

Maine voters were the nation's first to use a new voting system in a statewide election letting them rank candidates by preference rather than choosing just one.

Under the system, now used in a few local jurisdictions, the election is over if one candidate wins a majority. But if not, the lowest vote-getter is eliminated, with their votes reallocated until one contender gains a majority.

The use of the system angered outgoing Republican Governor Paul LePage, who told a television station it was "the most horrific thing in the world." He said he might not certify the election results.

Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap said the election results would be binding anyway, the Portland Press Herald said.

“Whether it’s a solution for agents or policyholders, our approach to insurance and innovation is centered on investing in tools and products that promote the ease of doing business with us and our independent agency partners,” said Jennifer Jennings, vice president of marketing at Grange. “Expanding our participation on TrustedChoice.com supports that goal and helps us combine our strengths with an established platform that caters to and evolves with the needs of our agents and policyholders.”

According to TrustedChoice.com Senior Vice President of Carrier Relations Vincent Savarese, insurance companies with an eye on differentiation see TrustedChoice.com as an ideal insurtech partner. “It’s exciting to see innovation-focused insurers like Grange choose to expand their partnerships with us. Hemp, Inc. Applauds Addition of Hemp Legislation to 2018 Farm Bill

SPRING HOPE, NC, June 13, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Hemp, Inc. (OTC PINK: HEMP), a global leader in the industrial hemp industry with the largest multipurpose industrial hemp processing facility in the western hemisphere, announced today the company applauds Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for getting his hemp legislation, known as the Hemp Farming Act, included in the 2018 Farm Bill."Securing the Hemp Farming Act as part of the 2018 Farm Bill has been a top priority of mine. I look forward to continuing to work with my Senate colleagues on this and many other issues important to Kentucky agriculture as we move towards consideration of the Farm Bill," McConnell said in a statement.

The Senate's farm bill still needs to be approved by the Senate Agriculture Committee and the full chamber. In April, McConnell introduced a bill that would remove industrial hemp from the federal government’s schedule of controlled substances. The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 stipulates that hemp will be legalized and removed from the Controlled Substances Act and also makes industrial hemp eligible for crop insurance.

“Politicians on both sides of the political aisle are recognizing that the cultivation and manufacturing of hemp in the United States is crucial to empowering farmers nationwide to generate new income streams and further grow our agricultural economy,” said Hemp, Inc. CEO Bruce Perlowin. “The movement toward the federal legalization of hemp is gaining momentum as more states pass hemp legalization laws and an increasing amount of policy makers support legalizing hemp on Capitol Hill.”

Notably, there are now 40 states in the nation that have legalized hemp. Companies seeking to enter or further develop their footprint in the industrial hemp marketplace are aligning with Hemp, Inc. for the company’s proven expertise and state-of-the-art hemp processing and manufacturing infrastructure in Spring Hope, North Carolina. Hemp, Inc.’s 85,000 square foot hemp processing and manufacturing facility has been operational since August, 2017.

Hemp, Inc.’s consulting agreement with HQ Global Education, Inc., a scientific research development company, entails that Hemp, Inc.  will provide consulting services in an effort to help HQ Global Education, Inc. expand into the hemp CBD industry. In addition, Hemp, Inc. also announced  that the company encourages large scale companies to secure their hemp biomass now before Hemp, Inc.’s supply runs out.

Hemp, Inc. also recently announced that its strategic hemp growing partner Veteran Village Kins Community Arizona, Inc., had completed installation of the solar and wind-powered energy system for its 500-acre Veteran Village Kins Community in Golden Valley, Arizona. The Veteran Village Kins Community is designed to grow hemp and produce CBD products to benefit veterans as well as generate revenue for Hemp, Inc., the Veteran Village, and individual veterans living in the community.

Dozens of master growers, from Oregon, Colorado, California, Kentucky, North Carolina, Nevada and, of course, Arizona, companies and organizations have expressed an interest in pursuing a joint venture with Hemp, Inc. to each grow industrial hemp on the 300 fenced acres in Arizona as part of "The Great United American Hemp Project." Interested master growers, from around the country, should contact Project Manager, Dwight Jory at ecogold22@gmail.com.

Read the following October 24, 2017 press release, Hemp, Inc. Announces Strategic Hemp Growing Partner "Veteran Village Kins Community Arizona, Inc." Completes Final Site Plan Blueprints, below:

Hemp, Inc. has announced that its strategic growing partner, "Veteran Village Kins Community Arizona, Inc.," has completed its final site plan blueprints for its 500-acre site in Golden Valley, Arizona (20 miles north of Kingman, AZ and 90 minutes from Las Vegas, NV). The site plan was submitted to the Mohave County Building Department for final review. The Company is also in the final stages of completing the necessary infrastructure to support an off-grid, renewable, energy system. With the solar equipment in place, the site's solar power operation is now complete.

Dwight Jory, the Project Manager for the "Veteran Village Kins Community Arizona, Inc.," said, "We are very happy with the progress. Our Kins Community is really beginning to come together." In anticipation of planting to begin during the spring, 300 acres have been fenced, 16 overnight trailer park sites are under construction, and six 40x40-ft organic vegetable gardens are ready for seasonal planting, according to Jory. As for the 6 geodesic domes mentioned in an earlier press release, 1 is structurally complete with only the electrical and plumbing to be completed. The rest are on site awaiting final site plan approval. "We are now accepting volunteers who have expressed an interest in helping to build the first Kins Community for our veterans," said Jory. Those interested in making the first hemp growing CBD-producing "Veteran Village Kins Community" become a reality should contact Ms. Sandra Williams via email (swilliams@hempinc.com).

One thousand trees, on 36 of the 500-acres, have also been planted, with an additional 1,000 trees on order. The "Veteran Village Kins Community" site plan also includes a 100,000-square foot GMP compliant, central processing plant, CBD testing laboratory, and various health and wellness centers to support veterans who may have psychological, emotional or health issues.

"As Hemp, Inc. positions itself on the forefront of America's industrial hemp revolution, we see our partnership with 'Veteran Village Kins Community Arizona, Inc.' being paramount in supporting the small family farm movement that we are confident will reshape the American landscape," said Perlowin. "As we work toward getting our eco-village up and running in Arizona, we are also aggressively scouting strategic locations in other states including North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. Giving veterans and other Americans a place to learn new skills and take part in this multi-billion-dollar hemp CBD market is very exciting. It's a big part of our mission to give back."

According to Perlowin, seven "master hemp growers" from Oregon, Colorado, California, Kentucky, North Carolina, Nevada and, of course, Arizona have expressed an interest in pursuing a joint venture with Hemp, Inc. to each grow industrial hemp on the 300 fenced acres in Arizona. Perlowin says he'll call this "The Great United American Hemp Project."

The funds are to be used for homeownership in the communities in which they serve, either through new construction or rehabilitation.

FHLBank Atlanta held a launch event on Sunday during the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Annual Meeting in Boston. Stephen K. Benjamin, Mayor of Columbia, South Carolina and President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, was on hand and spoke enthusiastically of the Community Heroes initiative.

FHLBank Atlanta’s Senior Vice President and Director of Community Investment Services, Arthur L. Fleming, noted that the structured partnerships approach will enable strong and productive engagements between FHLBank Atlanta member financial institutions, local governments, and local builders while achieving local community revitalization objectives. “This structured partnership approach and the objectives are absolutely aligned with the mission of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta,” said Fleming.

Study Shows Istation Assessment Predicts Virginia Reading Test Outcomes

Second study this year proves Istation’s effectiveness

Dallas, TX, June 13, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Istation, a Dallas-based leading provider of educational technology, reports that a study conducted by a Southern Methodist University professor shows that Istation assessments can reliably predict student performance on the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) English Reading tests.

The research compared Istation’s Indicators of Progress (ISIP™) Reading scores and SOL English Reading scores for third through fifth grades. Chalie Patarapichayatham, who has a doctorate in Educational Measurement and Evaluation, conducted the study, which was published in May.

“Overall, I conclude that ISIP Reading test scores are predictive of SOL English Reading test scores for 3rd through 5th grade data,” Patarapichayatham writes in the study.

She goes on to explain how the Istation results relate to Virginia’s SOL scores.

“If a student does very well on ISIP measures, it is likely that he or she will do very well on SOL English Reading tests,” she says in the study. “The ISIP cut scores to predict SOL English Reading tests are useful for school administrators, superintendents, teachers, and parents to predict students’ performance on SOL English Reading tests.”

These results give teachers, parents, and students a solid benchmark so they know what skills must be improved in order for students to do well on the end-of-instruction tests. Istation also provides teaching tools that address those specific skills.

“Istation understands the importance of providing teachers and administrators with actionable data to ensure ongoing progress-monitoring during and across academic years,” said Richard H. Collins, Istation Chairman and CEO. “It is great news that ISIP cut scores can now also be used to predict Virginia’s SOL achievement levels.”

This is the second state this year to confirm the predictability of ISIP assessments for state exams. An academic study published earlier this year from the University of Central Florida showed Istation’s ability to accurately predict student scores on the Florida Standards Assessments.

As in Virginia, Istation was shown to give Florida educators, parents, and students critical information on how to improve their performance. That knowledge can support differentiated instruction to help students perform well on the tests, which often determine whether students pass to the next grade.

For a full copy of the research materials in both states, interested parties can visit www.istation.com/Studies online.

Proposal To Divide California Into 3 States Will Be On November Ballot

Proposal To Divide California Into 3 States Will Be On November Ballot Watch VideoSome California residents are trying to split up the state — again.

The proposal to divide California into three states was approved to go on the November ballot Tuesday after it got enough signatures.

A website for the Cal 3 campaign says it would split the state into California, Northern California and Southern California. The Golden State's population would be divided almost equally among the three new states.

The campaign says that the creation of the separate states would lead to a stronger education system, safer roads and infrastructure, and lower taxes.

This definitely isn't a new thing. There have been previous attempts to turn California into six smaller states and even separate from the U.S.

If Cal 3 passes in November, it would be the first existing U.S. state to split since West Virginia was officially recognized by the government in 1863.

Based on previous movements, though, it's likely a long shot. Reported by Newsy 2 hours ago.

Tim Draper is known for having crazy ideas — and for funding them.

Now, the legendary Silicon Valley investor is making headway on a longtime and perhaps unrealistic effort to split California into three separate states: Northern California, California (new), and Southern California.

Draper's proposal to cut up the Golden State qualified on Tuesday to appear on the ballot in November's general election. It received more than 402,468 valid signatures, more than the amount required by state law, thanks to an ambitious campaign, called Cal 3, and financial backing from the early investor in Tesla, Skype, and Hotmail.

If a majority of California voters that cast ballots agree to divide the state into three, the plan would need approval from both houses of the California Legislation. Then it would reach the US Congress.

The last time an existing state split up, it was the 1860s and a civil war broke out. West Virginia was formed by seceding from a Confederate state over differences around slavery.

Draper has reasons for wanting to slice and dice his home state.

With slightly more than 39 million people, California is the most populous state in the nation. Supporters of the initiative argue the state isn't fairly represented with senators in Washington. The proposal would give the people of California six senators.

According to the Cal 3 website, partitioning the state would also allow state legislatures to make better and more sensible decisions for their communities.

"The California state government isn't too big to fail, because it is already failing its citizens in so many crucial ways," Peggy Grande, a spokesperson for Citizens for Cal 3 campaign, said in a Tuesday statement. "The reality is that for an overmatched, overstretched, and overwrought state-government structure, it is too big to succeed. Californians deserve a better future." Even still, the proposal is as radical as it is unlikely to pass.

Critics of the initiative say having three Californias would actually diminish the power of Democrats. With its 55 electors in the Electoral College, California has long been a stronghold for the Democratic Party. Three smaller states would change that equation, which worries some Democrats.

Under the proposal, each state would have about one-third of the state population.

*California (new):* This would include six counties: Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey, and San Benito counties.

*Southern California:* This would have 12 counties: San Diego, San Bernadino, Orange, Riverside, Mono, Madera, Inyo, Tulare, Fresno, Kings, Kern, and Imperial counties.

*Northern California:* This would include 40 counties including the San Francisco Bay Area and the remaining counties north of Sacramento, the current state capital.

This is the third time Draper has tried to get voters to weigh in on breaking up the most populous US state. He backed proposals in 2012 and 2014 to create six California states, but both initiatives fell short of gathering enough valid signatures.

In 2016, an effort called Calexit sought to separate California from the US. The secession movement fell off after its leader announced he was moving to Russia.
