Everything you need to know about Discord, the new "Skype for gamers"

Everything you need to know about Discord, the new Skype for gamers Among gamers, the hip way to chat with friends is not via Skype, Slack or TeamSpeak, but Discord, a relatively new messaging app that's starting to surge in popularity.

Discord was specifically designed to serve the gaming community. The app, which offers text messaging and voice and video calling, allows gamers to communicate and strategize with friends mid-game. But it's lightweight and streamlined, so it won't fill up their computers' hard drives or bog down their processors.

The app has benefitted from the boom in online, team-based video games such as Fortnite Battle Royale, Overwatch, and League of Legends. But it now now hosts hundreds of thousands of online communities. While many are focused on gaming, you'll find ones dedicated to other interests as well.

*Here's everything you need to know about Discord:*

*SEE ALSO: How to find and use the new shopping cart in 'Fortnite: Battle Royale,' whether you're playing solo or with your friends*

-Discord has started to take off with gamers.-

Discord was launched in 2015, but its popularity exploded in the last year, particularly among gamers and other communities that primarily meet online. It now has 19 million daily users, up from 8.9 million at this time last year, according to the company's blog.

-Just about anyone can sign up and use it — and it's free.-

Anyone over the age of 13 can download and use Discord. It's available for PCs, Macs and mobile devices. Its developers have made clear the core features of Discord will always be available for free.

However, the company also offers a $4.99 a month subscription version of the app that includes features such as animated avatars, custom emoji, and higher quality screen sharing. It also allows you to upload larger files.-Developers have focused on making the app safe — and weeding out hate groups.-

The messaging app got some bad publicity last year, when it was reported that many alt-right; "incel," or male supremacist; and other hate groups were using it to meet, talk, and plan real-life gatherings, particularly ahead of the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, last August. The app allows users to chat anonymously and privately, which helped attract the groups.

Discord's developers have since banned many of those hate groups. But identifying and ousting them can be like playing a game of whack-a-mole; even after they're banned, many come back in other places.

Still, in general, Discord is safe. No one can join a channel except by invitation, and users have to choose to join them. So no one can make you view or post content you're not interested in.

Discord also offers you the ability to block content that's unsuitable for work and to disconnect from servers at any time. You can easily mute or block individual users and prevent anyone you don't know from adding you as a friend.

Even so, such features won't necessarily prevent all harassment or bullying within particular text or voice channels.

For parents who are concerned about their teens using Discord to chat with friends, I recommend the same amount of caution you would have with social-media sites such as Twitter or Reddit. I suggest you read Discord's Community Guidelines and the Parent's Guide to Discord, written by one of the service's developers.

Kraken Awarded $900,000 Contracts for Evaluation of SeaVision® Sensors and Artificial Intelligence Software

SeaVision® System will be used for Underwater Inspection and Autonomous Vehicle Control

ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland and Labrador and BREMEN, Germany, June 04, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Kraken Robotics Inc. (TSX-V:PNG) (OTCQB:KRKNF), is pleased to announce that its German subsidiary, Kraken Robotik GmbH, has secured over $900,000 in contract funding for two development initiatives for evaluation of SeaVision® sensors and AI control software for autonomous underwater vehicles. The two projects are called ARIM and RoboVaaS and are collaborative research activities funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy as part of the MarTERA Horizon 2020 initiative of the European Commission. Both projects will use Kraken’s innovative SeaVision® sensor for monitoring and inspection services and autonomous vehicle control. SeaVision® is the world’s first full-color 3D underwater laser scanner, with unprecedented scan speed and pixel density. The real-time aspects of the sensor make it ideally suited as an enabling technology for autonomous underwater operations. The contracts start in June 2018 and continue over a period of 36 months, with Kraken receiving approximately two-thirds of the funding over the next 18 months.

In the ARIM (*A*utonomous *R*obotic sea-floor *I*nfrastructure for bentho-pelagic *M*onitoring) project, Kraken will use the SeaVision® system to guide and control an autonomous mobile seafloor crawler system. The crawler technology used in the project is based on the Jacobs University Wally crawler, which has already been extensively used as a subsea resident system at the Ocean Network Canada cabled observatory. Together with Geomar (Germany), iSeaMC (Germany), METAS (Norway), the Marine Research Institute (Norway), ICM-CSIC (Spain) and Deusto Sistemas (Spain), Kraken will be applying the SeaVision® system for navigation, autonomous obstacle avoidance and automatic identification of species in a benthic habitat environmental monitoring application. These monitoring activities will provide important spatial-temporal data for the scientific evaluation of marine ecosystems and will furthermore provide the basis to meet the regulations for all industrial subsea activities with potential environmental impact, such as offshore oil and gas, ocean renewables and deep-sea mining.

Subsea digitalisation and digital services for shipping are at the core of the RoboVaaS (*Robo*tic *V*essels *a*s *a* *S*ervice) project. RoboVaaS will further the integration of autonomous systems, sensors, vessel and shore services into a digital service platform aimed at improving the efficiency of ports and shipping vessels. Kraken will perform a vertical integration of the SeaVision® system in a ship hull inspection services platform developed by Fraunhofer CML (Germany). Additional partners are the Hamburg Port Authority (Germany), TU Hamburg - Harburg (Germany), Sonarsim ltd. (Ireland), University of Limerick (Ireland) and University of Padova (Italy). Improving the efficiency of ports through automation provides a vital competitive edge and is directly in line with the product strategy of Kraken.

Dr. Jakob Schwender, Managing Director of Kraken Robotik GmbH said, “We are delighted to be awarded these two contracts. Aligning advanced remote sensing capabilities - such as those provided by our SeaVision™ system - with underwater robotics and artificial intelligence will help mitigate environmental impact on the seafloor and improve safety at sea.”

*About SeaVision®*

SeaVision® is the world’s first RGB underwater laser imaging system that offers the resolution, range and scan rate to deliver dense full colour 3D point cloud images of subsea infrastructure with millimetre accuracy in real time. The initial system is designed for deployment on underwater robotic platforms such as Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs).

Equipped with a high-resolution camera and laser, the system allows operators to reconstruct objects on the seabed in such a way that detailed models can be subsequently produced for 3D visualization. Its 3D imaging capabilities enable the generation of geo-registered “as-built” models of structures on the seabed or in the water column, survey of subsea infrastructure and comparison against baseline models and detection of structural defects or other out-of-spec conditions that exceed threshold values.

The ability to generate accurate 3D reconstruction of underwater infrastructure is an important requirement for commercial, military and ocean research applications. While sonar is the technology of choice for covering large areas, 3D laser systems such as Kraken’s SeaVision® provide significantly higher resolution and accuracy at inspection ranges of under 10 metres.

SeaVision® uses a full colour laser scanning process that is repeated hundreds of times per second to generate coordinate values of millions of points on a reflected surface. The coordinates and intensity associated with each reflection of the laser are processed in real time to generate an ultra high-resolution point cloud. SeaVision® produces over 300,000 colored points per second and can reconstruct a 3D object in real-time with typical spatial accuracy of less than 2 millimetres. These datasets can be used to create highly detailed models for 3D visualization, asset management, artificial intelligence and predictive analytics.

The upcoming 28th Annual Lawyers Have Heart 10K, 5K and Fun Walk on June 9 to benefit the American Heart Association boasts a diverse running field made up of top elite athletes, as well as participants from all walks of life.

WASHINGTON, DC (PRWEB) June 04, 2018

This year’s 10K races features a new elite division with an international field. Athletes from Chad, Ethiopia and Kenya, along with incredible talent from the United States, will look to break course records and win a share of the $20,000 in prize money. The 10K race is USATF certified and Pacers serves as the official race timer.

“We are thrilled that Lawyers Have Heart will be a stage for athletes from all over the world, and all walks of life, to compete for this year’s titles,” said Emily Wang Murphy, 2018 LHH Co-Chair and Partner at Thompson Coburn LLP. “I am honored to be a part of the 28th year of the event, where over 6,500 runners and walkers will cross the finish line and rally around the mission of the American Heart Association.”

The new 10K elite division will have their sights set on the existing event records – for the men, 30:18 and for the women, 34:32. “Often called the premiere athletic philanthropic event, specifically led by the greater DC legal community, it is exciting to see this race grow,” said 2018 LHH Co-Chair Eric D. Reicin, VP, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of MorganFranklin Consulting, LLC. “Given some of the seed times, there is a decent chance that we will see our event records fall,” Reicin added.

The 10K elite division will feature 47 men and 27 women including:

•Demssew Tsegg Abebe, 32, from Ethiopia and running out of Washington, DC, completed the Reims Marathon in just over 2 hours.
•Temesgen Habtermariam Bekele, 27 from Ethiopia and running out of New York, NY, placed 1st in Anthem Marathon in Virginia and 5th in Broad Street 10 Mile Run.
•Tadesse Yae Dabi, 29, of Washington, DC, who recently placed 1st in the Japan 4 Mile Race and 4th in the Brooklyn Half Marathon.
•Rebekah Hernandez, 22, of Silver Spring, MD, with a PR of 38:30 for 10K.
•Luke Janic, 21 of Hampton Falls, NH, who recently completed Pike's Peek 10K in 32:28.
•Sarah Loerch, 32, of Ashburn, VA, who recently placed 2nd in the Pike's Peek 10K in Rockville, MD with a time of 35:31.
•Maegan Krifchin, 29, of Washington, DC is a distance runner for Mizuno who won the 2017 Kobe Marathon women’s division in 2:33:14 and has run a 33:22 10K in sanctioned competition. 33:22 is more than a minute faster than the Lawyers Have Heart event record.
•Desta Beriso Morkama, of Ethiopia, is the 2017 defending champion (32:03) of the 27th Lawyers Have Heart 10K, and the 2017 Marine Corps Marathon winner in 2:25:14.

“We expect an extremely competitive race this year, across all of our divisions,” said George Banker, American Heart Association volunteer and elite athlete coordinator. “The closing pace along K Street will be quite fast.”
The general 10K divisions – open and open masters, will be hotly contested as well. Runners will be competing for both the course records and prize money. Lawyers Have Heart event records currently are held by:·     Jerry Lawson - 27 - Open Men, 2004 - 30:18 of Falls Church, VA
·     Jim Hage - 44 – Masters Men, 2002 - 32:56 of Lanham, MD
·     Susanna Sullivan - 24 - Open Women, 2014 - 34:32 of Falls Church, VA
·     Alisa Harvey - 40 – Masters Women, 2006 - 36:50 of Manassas, VA

Just a few of the masters division (ages 40+) stars to watch include:

•Wilson Komen, hailing from Kenya, will be competing in the open masters. He won the open men’s race previously in 2005 with a time of 30:27.
•Philippe Rolly has the potential to become the second person to win both the masters division and open division. Rolly took first in the following years: 1999 - 32:22; 2000 - 31:34; 2001 - 30:49; and 2004-31:23. Notably, Rolly is the only person to hold titles in the 5K and 10K. He holds the 5K master record 15:53 from 2017 and is the only master runner thus far to go under 16 minutes.
•Michael Wardian is running the 10K again and is arguably the world's best ultra marathoner and a hometown hero. He works in Georgetown as a ship broker.

Since 1991, Lawyers Have Heart has raised over $12 million for AHA and each year is one of the largest 10K races in the Washington D.C. area. The event brings together more than 300 organizations and over 6,500 runners and walkers in support of the American Heart Association and seeks to raise $1.2M this year.
Race day events include the 10K Race, 5K Run and Fun Walk, all starting at 7:00 am. There will be a Post-Race Festival in Georgetown’s Washington Harbor following the race. Runners and spectators can enjoy refreshments, music, giveaways and prizes provided by friends and sponsors of Lawyers Have Heart. Will Compete Nationwide in World’s Fastest Growing Sport

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (PRWEB) June 04, 2018

ECPI University is proud to announce it is forming an eSports team that will be the first in Hampton Roads to play at the intercollegiate level. Competing as the ECPI University Rams, it has joined the National Association of Collegiate eSports (NACE) where it will face up to 87 other colleges and universities across the nation.

“ECPI University is so excited to have an eSports term,” says team coach and Associate Dean of Academic Technology Gerry White. “It just makes sense for our school, being so forward thinking with technology, to also help and shape the future of eSports.”

Tryouts are for the Rams are set for June 22 and 23. Each student that makes the team will receive a scholarship of between $1,000 and $5,000. “ECPI University has a longstanding tradition of leading the way locally and nationally for non-traditional learning and success,” says team manager and ECPI University Director of Web Services Mike Glover. “It only makes sense that we would lead the way with the first eSports Varsity team in Hampton Roads.”

For those unfamiliar with the eSports phenomena, it is developing at an exponential rate. No longer confined to local banquet halls, these events are now full-blown spectator sports, selling out venues like Madison Square Garden and Staples Center. And experts say this is just the beginning.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that eSports revenue will reach $1.5 billion by 2020. Moreover, the Philadelphia 76ers recently purchased the UK-based professional team, DIGNITAS. There’s even efforts underway to make eSports part of the Olympics.

A recent study conducted by Newzoo found:· The worldwide eSports audience will reach 380 million this year, a year-on-year growth of +13.5%.
· In 2017, there were 588 major eSports events that generated an estimated $59 million in ticket revenues, up from $32 million in 2016.
· The League of Legends World Championship was the most watched event on Twitch in 2017 with 49.5 million hours. It also generated $5.5 million in ticket revenues.

“Given its worldwide growth, it only makes sense that collegiate teams would then form and begin to compete,” says Glover. “We look forward to competing against all of these other forward-thinking schools across the country.”
